Polymer Engineer
who will bring a wealth of expertise and a knack for inventive thinking, prepared to excel in a dynamic, customer-centric organization.
The ideal candidate will join our newly formed Material Technologies team, which consists of three highly competent and dedicated scientists and engineers. This role reports directly to the Head of Material Technologies. The workplace is at Seal Engineering's site located in Fredrikstad, Norway.
Job responsibilities
In this role, you will get a unique opportunity to play a key role in researching, developing and qualifying polymer materials to support new product development initiatives. The position is a balanced role with a 50:50 time effort ratio between laboratory activities and office work.
You will be tasked to:
- Participate actively in projects and assignments with cross-functional teams consisting of material technology, technical, R&D, production, QA and sales groups
- Design, plan and execute experimental work as agreed with the project leader
- Perform physical tests, chemical analyses, chemical exposure studies, performance and reliability investigations, and failure diagnostics on metrological equipment operating in-house
- Ensure the proper maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical test instrumentation, periodically auditing equipment to verify correct calibration and use
- Design, diagnose and implement laboratory methods and procedures for evaluating the mechanical, physical, chemical, thermal, and performance characteristics of sealing materials
- Perform quality checks and assurance assessments on material supplies and products
- Assist in reviewing and solving manufacturing challenges related to seal production
- Collect and interpret experimental data using the optimal scientific and engineering principles
- Document and effectively communicate the results by compiling reports with recommendations and presenting the outputs to the team to facilitate timely and efficient decision-making
- Conduct literature reviews and technical information surveys to enhance your and company's expertise in the relevant areas and identify commercial opportunities
- Maintain up-to-date and well-organized technical library on material technologies, products, and designs
- Guarantee the safe and systematic operation of the material test and chemical laboratories by proper maintenance of equipment and ensuring the secure handling of all chemical
Desired qualifications:
- Ideally, you have an academic degree (M.Sc.) in polymer science, material technologies, chemical engineering or comparable disciplines. Extensive experience in industrial R&D settings may compensate the lack of formal education
- A documented track record (min. 3 years) in industrial or academic R&D activities covering polymer chemistry and engineering areas is strongly preferred
- You have a proven working knowledge of polymer materials, especially thermoplastics and elastomers, combined with a keen understanding of polymer structure-properties-processing relationships. Experience in applied material research and development in energy polymer applications is an advantage
- You are proficient in polymer characterization methods and experienced in operating relevant analytical instruments, such as mechanical tester, DMA, DSC, TGA, TMA, FTIR, Raman, tribometer, rheometer, rubber curemeter, optical microscope, etc.
- You are skilled in development and validation of bespoke test methods
- You demonstrate strong competence in acquisition, analysis and interpretation of scientific data. A proven competence in engineering and applied statistics is an asset. Ideally, you are certified and experienced in practical utilization of Six Sigma/DMAIC tools
- You are able to find, understand, interpret and apply scientific and technical information to progress innovation in the polymer and sealing technologies
- You present sound record-keeping and documentation skills, with the ability to write experimental procedures, organize data, and create high-quality written reports
- You are proficient in project management, with the ability to organize and manage workload and multiple assignments to achieve desired goals
- You are dedicated to laboratory safety practices
- It is essential that you communicate well in written and spoken English
